• A manufacturing process that brings them strength and design •
Elephantom.Design's Hurricane collection is made using the Nériage technique. Nériage. It's a surprising enough word to devote a few explorations to it. Straight from Japan, it designates techniques for creating patterns using colored and mixed clays. "Neri" means to mix and "age" - does not mean that it has crossed the ages even if it is the case 😉 - "age" means to turn. Neriage therefore consists of mixing colored clays or porcelain by turning them on the potter's wheel to obtain patterns that are not deposited on the surface of the object but integrated into the mass of the crafted ceramic object.
For the crafting of this beautiful collection of handmade ceramics, a part of the porcelain is first colored in the mass with dyes or metal oxides. Once the porcelain is mixed and colored homogeneously, it is combined with pure white porcelain before being thrown. During the throwing of the piece, the porcelain is marbled by memorizing the spiral of the potter's wheel. The throwing must be as precise and as regular as possible in order to obtain the spiral patterns reminiscent of tropical cyclones. The cup obtained is turned a few days later (deburring of the body and the foot). A first firing prepares the piece for the glaze. This is followed by a second vitrification firing after which the glaze will become solid, shiny and transparent so as to reveal the shimmering splendor of the mixed ceramics.
You will surely be pleased to know that these porcelain cups are part of a larger collection - the Hurricane collection. They will therefore go very well with the items of this collection but also with those of the Sea Ice collection.
